You’re Outta Here: Social Decorum

I am always amazed at how people act when they are in large groups.

You see, I like to observe people.  Recently, I was at a graduation ceremony.  I was amazed at the lack of social decorum.  Here we are at an exercise designed to honor the senior class of said school and in the middle of the “Senior Roll Call,” we have parents and other relatives getting up and leaving.  All I could think to myself was how rude it was that people would actually walk out while the senior class was being honored just because their student relative’s name had already been called.  That to me is socially unacceptable, not to mention selfish.  These relatives just missed the end of the ceremony where the students were actually pronounced as graduates.  I hate to inform people, but seniors are not graduates until that moment.  Please don’t misunderstand me, I am not saying that these people’s children aren’t important or anything else, but because of the lack of social decorum, others may or may not have seen their relative cross the stage because someone was walking in front of them.  I can only hope that if those same people who walked out on that incident are not on the other side of the coin during another graduation.  These will be the same people who make a big scene about the whole thing.  My advice, sit down, watch the entire ceremony and deal with it.  You will eventually get out of there just like everyone else.

I agree completely with this post. I was recently at HCHS graduation and between people leaving during the ceremony and yelling when their graduate walked across the stage, it was almost unbearable. They turn what should be a civilized ceremony into a farce.

Did you actually expect social decorum at Halifax County High School? I know we all want things to go well, but look at the crowd. There were thugs flashing gang symbols for goodness sakes! Each student had up to 7 invitations, and rumor has it some people printed off more. Let’s see. Four hundred times 7 is 2,800 people. Add the students and you get 3,200 people. Throw in staff and the people who were there without an invitation (or with a fake one), and you could “convervatively” guess 3,500 people were at this event.
I firmly believe that 7 invitations per student is ridiculous, considering the size of the facility and the moronic behavior of many who attended.
I was at this event, and early on I saw one of the cops throw up his hands and say “I give up”. I was also one who left early, as it didn’t take long for me to have enough of the BS. A decent, well mannered person can’t enjoy the graduation of a family member or any other public event anymore thanks to the utter lack of consideration that has become the hallmark of people in this country.
