What if they held a race around here and no one seemed to care?

Seems that way about VIR’s Gold Cup races that took place this weekend.

According to a press release from VIR, track general manager Josh Lief said “The Gold Cup is a highlight of our racing year. It celebrates the legacy of road racing and sports cars at VIR and has brought some of the brightest stars in racing back for reunion with the track that helped secure their place in history.”

Really, Josh? If it truly is the highlight of your racing year, wouldn’t there be a lot of coverage of that race or the events leading up to it? Shouldn’t there be some kind of local or regional media coverage about this event? Can anybody reading this name anybody or anything that went on at VIR this past weekend? That’s what I thought.

I’m sure that VIR did very well with turnout and attendance, but I’m betting that less than 10% of that attendance came from the Southside VA area. And that leads into the main problem that I have with VIR. They can trumpet how good that they are for the local economies, yet they do nothing to attract the Little People from the area that they claim to be helping out.
