The Danville Police Department held a press conference today to discuss Monday’s officer-involved shooting of a dog while serving warrants.
Chief of Police Philip Broadfoot read a prepared statement then took questions from reporters from WSET, WDBJ, WSLS, WGSR, the Register & Bee, the Star-Tribune and SouthsideCentral.com. Broadfoot was clear in his opinion that his officer’s actions were within department policy.
Here are some photos and the wrap-up audioclip from the press conference.

I can’t get any video. What’s happening?
This Chief, seems a heck of a lot more publicly supportive of his officer in the shooting of a dog, than Halifax County Sheriff Noblin was when there was a shooting of a suspect at Sheetz.
Public support of your officers is very admirable.
I hear the dog’s family has contacted Jesse Jackson’s dog. Since the dachsund was not caucasian, will the race card be played? Will the police throw the family a bone? Stay tuned.
I know people get attached to their pets but gees if the officer had shot a person it would not have been this much fuss over it.
But don’t forget Danville does have a leash law. I am sorry the pup was killed but “what if” it had been rabid and bit the officer. What would the conversations be then, or would there be any at all!!
