It looks like they have big plans this year…
This year, they’re moving the event over to the Halifax County Fairgrounds. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Department, South Boston Police Department, Town of Halifax Police Department and the Virginia State Police will be the hosts for the event that gives “residents and local law enforcement the feeling of bonding and moral support, joining to fight crime in our community”. This will be the eleventh NNO for Halifax County.
We’ll have more details of Halifax County’s National Night Out as the event draws closer.
Funny story but the community has little to do with our local NNO. Most of the committee is composed of cops (from only 2 of 4 county departments) and pretrial officers. It seems the community at large doesn’t give a damn about holding NNO. They just want to show up, get the free stuff and go home. Business donations are apparently at a record low this year and some law enforcement agencies aren’t showing much interest in having the event at all. I also understand that calls for volunteers to organize the event have met with the sound of chirping crickets.
Bruce, you should look into the real reason it moved to the fairgrounds. There’s a rumor that the town was going to charge NNO a large amount of money to close Factory Street and Seymour Drive for the event. This has never been done for any previous event.
Interesting.
I definitely will ask some questions on that.
