But there’s a BIG difference between this and the “McLean vs. Dachshund” incident. A very BIG difference.
From a Danville Police Dept. news release…
Today at approximately 7:43AM Danville Police responded to the intersection of Kinzer Avenue and Central Street in reference to a pit bull dog chasing children who were at a school bus stop. Officers did not locate the dog. At approximately 8:22 AM, Danville Police were again dispatched to the same location about a pit bull chasing people down the street. Officers arrived and found the dog running loose and learned that a neighbor had already used pepper spray on the dog. The dog approached one of the responding officers aggressively, but the officer was able to coax it to its chain behind 213 Kinzer Avenue. There were three other pit bulls chained up behind the house.
As the officers were leaving, the dog broke away from his chain and attacked one of the chained pit bulls. The officers used pepper spray to stop the attack. The dog charged the officer, but then ran away. A family member arrived and volunteered to retrieve the dog. Before he could capture it, it attacked another of the chained pit bulls. The family member could not separate the two dogs. Both dogs were then Tased by officers, which provided the opportunity to attach a catchpole to the aggressive dog and drag him out of range of the chained dog. The chained dog immediately recovered from being Tased, but the aggressive dog died within seconds.
The Danville Area Humane Society arrived on the scene and seized two of the chained pit bull dogs. The third chained dog was taken by a family member to receive treatment for its wounds. The owner of the dogs, Derrick Peatross age 27 of the residence was charged with four counts of having an unlicensed dog and three counts of having an unvaccinated dog.
Sad. Horribly sad. We’ve got an irresponsible owner who doesn’t give a damn about his dogs and now one of them is dead. We’ve also got a police department that handled this case perfectly under the stress of of the McLean incident. I dare somebody to say that any part of the DPD’s actions today were wrong in any way. Well done, guys. It’s just a damned shame that an animal died because of a uncaring owner.
I agree with you 100% on this one.
Dogs deserve better owners than this guy.
True! Perfectly responsible ownership is essentially needed. Dogs need responsible owners more than owners need good dogs! I have always believed that responsible ownership starts before bringing the dog home. After bringing him, the responsibilities simply increase. People who are not aware of this simple fact should spare serious thought over this, and those take this for granted should never keep a dogs.
It’s the owner’s fault here, and not the dog’s.
