Let’s head over to Caswell County (NC) for this one.
The plan was simple enough, hide the car behind some bushes and rob some good people while they were away from their home. Some enterprising fellows decided to pull off a heist Friday on Walters Mill Road in Providence NC and it went fairly well until they loaded the car full of loot and discovered that it had sunk to the frame in the mudhole they parked it in. In case you hadn’t noticed, it had been raining biblical proportions for days now. Anything not covered in asphalt or cement is a mudhole and not a good place to park the family sedan/getaway vehicle.
Imagine Mr. Homeowner’s surprise when he gets home to find his yard converted to a mud bog with two morons trying to dig an Oldsmobile out of the Carolina mud. The alleged culprits claimed to be checking septic tanks… which almost seemed reasonable as the getaway car was nearly in the septic tank. One phone call, several hours, several deputies, several tow trucks and lots of amused onlookers later, one of the alleged crooks was in custody (the other fled), and all was well again.
