Where are the “Thumbs!” going in this edition? Let’s see if they’re flying up or down…
Let’s get it going with some seasonal thoughts!
- Thumbs UP! to VDOT and all of the local government’s road crews for working their collective asses off and clearing the roads quickly during the recent winter storm.
- Going in the opposite direction, we’ve got to give a Thumbs DOWN! to some of the lazy-asses that refuse to clean off their sidewalks and steps. Let’s also give a Thumbs DOWN! to more lazy-asses that refuse to clean the snow off their vehicle. Once they get on the road, you better hope you’re not the driver behind them.
- Thumbs UP! to all of the people that take the time to put up the beautiful Christmas decorations. You might think they’re tacky and gaudy, but then you need to relax. The bigger, the better.
- And one last Christmas thumb… Thumbs DOWN! to Walgreens. That’s the only retail chain that was open on Christmas Day that we know of. Can’t we all have one day to celebrate and relax and families & friends? And if you went to Walgreens on Christmas Day, you’ll get a Thumbs DOWN! for showing support for this shameful business practice.
Now let’s go back to some general thumbs…
- Thumbs UP! to the Danville Area Humane Society. They’ve had a successful run over the few months including getting Danville’s City Council to pass a ban on dog-chaining. Paulette Dean is to be commended for the work that she does on the behalf of the animals that can’t speak for themselves. But the Thumbs go waaaaaaay UP! for their latest initiative. They’re going to be working on establishing a no-kill animal adoption center. It’s going to take around $750,000, but this is the type of project that they’ll be able to get grants for.
- Let’s end this edition of “Thumbs!” with a Thumbs UP! to WGSR (Star News)’s coverage of all of the region’s Christmas parades. They’ve had so much fun covering the parades that they created their own 47.3 digital subchannel that features 24/7 parade rebroadcasts. You can also see the parades at WGSR’s website. Click on the links on their sidebar (and thanks again for the link to SouthsideCentral, folks!)
That’s our “Thumbs!” for this edition. Got some of your own? Put them in the comments below or send them in!
CVS was open on Christmas day. Do I get a thumbs down because I went there to get some medicine because I didn’t feel good?
IHOP was open. BDubs and Hams opened at 5.
It’s unfortunate that some people have to work on Christmas day, but it’s also lucky for us all that they do. Policemen, Firemen, Doctors and Nurses (among others) perform a service which is too valuable to take a day off. The same might be said of pharmacy workers. Hopefully these fine folks got to take a different day off in order to celebrate their Holiday. Thanks to those who sacrificed their Christmas for our safety and well-being!
Bateman: If it was plain old OTC medicines, you’ll get a partial thumbs down for not having a stocked medicine cabinet. I know I’ve got enough stuff in my medicine cabinet to keep me comfortable for at least 24 hours.
As for the restaurants, that’s a shame too.
I’m afraid Wally world might be open next year.
Thumbs down for the restaurants and CVS.
But think about it. If people go to the hospital and they are giving prescriptions and need them filled someone needs to be open to fill them. Doctors, Police, Fire and rescue workers and dispatchers are working. They are making the ultimate sacrafice to be away from their families. Folks who are volunteering at homeless shelters. or feeding the hungry. The list goes on. To some it is just another day. For those who work on the holidays many things would not get done. Think about it.
No stores would open if there wasn’t a market for it. Isn’t that what capitalism is all about?
Get over it, Bruce! LOL
