Thumbs! (1/27 edition)

We’ve got Thumbs! and we’re not afraid to use them!

Let’s kick it off with…

  • Thumbs UP! to Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders for coming up with the idea of the “Coalition for a Safe Danville”. It’s a good idea with a lot of potential. Community & civic leaders are partnering to help make Danville a safer place to live and raise the quality of life. But we’d be remiss in not giving a…
  • Thumbs DOWN! for holding the kickoff meeting on a Tuesday afternoon (in the middle of a business day!) I would love to have attended this meeting, but the world of work doesn’t allow a majority of people to just take off in the middle of the day. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9th at 4 PM. That’s slightly better, but it still locks out a lot of people. They can do better.

After and up and down set of thumbs, let’s get Thumbier!

  • Thumbs UP! to the Commonwealth’s Attorney of Halifax County, Kim White. She was inducted into the 2010 Class of Fellows at the Virginia Bar Association’s annual meeting this past weekend. That’s an honor that denotes members of the judiciary that are “deemed to be outstanding in their profession and in their community”.
  • Thumbs UP! to Robby Wazeka, Ronald Snead, David White and Barry Bank. These four men have filed the paperwork to take over the open District 5 Halifax County Board of Supervisors seat vacated by James Edmunds (who was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates). But again, we’ve got to throw…
  • Thumbs DOWN! to the Board of Supervisors for putting these four candidates’ interviews behind a closed session. Yep, we know that there’s nothing illegal about doing so, but wouldn’t it be nice to throw rays of sunshine into the process of how that open seat will be filled? We think that if the public were allowed to see and hear the questioning of the interview, it would restore some faith to the theory that the decisions are not pre-made and that this interview process could be just a formality. Nah, that would never happen in Halifax County politics, would it?

Ups. Downs. Those Thumbs! are going everywhere. Got some Thumbs! of your own? Use the comment box below and let us know.
