One of Virginia’s best political bloggers has floated up an interesting political theory that partially makes some sense.
NotAndySere: Prediction: McDonnell for Vice-President
I agree with the thoughts that Bob McDonnell would make a good VP candidate in 2012. He’s got the charisma and his growing name recognition are going to push his national profile much higher. However, I disagree with his thoughts about Virginia’s state budget having continuous problems for the next few years. I believe that with the economy picking up, the state budget woes will slowly go away.
But let’s look at the latter part of his article. I’ll agree that if Bolling assumes the Governor job, he locks in the nomination for the 2014 election. But it’s time for another Crazy Conspiracy theory. Cuccinelli could easily jump to the Lt. Governor slot on the ticket. and that would lead to an opening for the Republican Attorney General slot. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? A Southside VA candidate would be highly qualified for that slot, just sayin’.
Interesting thoughts indeed. I think a Thune/McDonell ticket would be interesting. there are many possibilities with Bob as VP.
Let me throw another twist; Since Going from a powerful AG position to a part time pretty much powerless job as Lt. Gov. (especially with the always possibility that a democrat wins the gov.)
However, a Cuccinelli or Bolling run against Senator Webb in 2012, might be possible. That would allow the other to run for governor…still leaving the AG spot to “the well qualified SS Va candidate.” Beating Webb will not be easy though, he is moderating himself more than his first couple of years…and seems to be at least pretending to listen to the people about a couple of different issues.
kim white for governor! oh. you’re talking about AG. okay. kim white for AG!
We’ll have to see if the budget gap closes with the economy picking up. Virginia’s economy has not been hurt very much by the recent downturn, but it was enough to empty out our paper thin unemployment insurance fund and cause all sorts of problems. Our budget system is very poorly designed.
I see no point for Cuccinelli to run for LG after being AG. Has anyone else ever done that? AG is just as reasonable to stay in and run for Governor down the road as trying to run for LG, which isn’t necessarily a promotion. An open LG spot will still be interesting.
We might see a Brown/McDonnell campaign in 2016 but not 2012 Bob will not make the same mistake Sarah Palin did. Bill Bolling might want to be the next governor of Va. Kim White would make a great AG if she wanted to make a run she would have my support.
Brown seems to be a fiscal one, and certainly appears to have his head on straight with regards to terrorism….but I am not sure I could vote for him for president/VP.
he was a big win for the republicans no doubt…but lets no “obamaify” him by annointing him too soon. We do not know enough about him yet.
I really like John Thune. Jim Coburn is another good senator. Congressman Mike Pence is pretty good too.
dave, very wise advice.
awww shucks. Thank you.
