Yuck of the Day!

It’s the new flavor of soft drinks… Yuck!

Beverages from several local soda fountain machines contaminated with bacteria

I think I’ll get a bottled drink next time. You?

Ewww! I’m not sure whether I wanted to know this! Ignorance was bliss! But thank you anyway. It also gives us another good reason to not eat McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc. If they can’t kill you with the grease they will kill you with bacteria in the drinks! 🙂 Thanks for the info!

We all know that the story is a bit hyped up, however, if those soda dispensers are not cleaned correctly, or just plain not cleaned at all, lots of nasty stuff can start living in there including various insects.

If it were really true, that people (not just one person with a specific sensitivity) got sick every time they drank a fountain soda, there would be lines leading into all of the local Emergency Rooms around the clock. I have been drinking fountain sodas since they were hand made by soda jerks in the 50’s and have never gotten sick, but I always prefer to buy a fountain soda from one of the large chains, especially McDonald’s, because you know they have a strict cleaning regimen in place. You can never be sure with a smaller restaurant if they ever clean the machines at all.

I don’t think they “hyped” the findings of bacteria. What purpose would a reputable college have of making up a story such as this? As for large chains having strict cleaning regimens, I know several people working at the very places you mentioned. Guess what? They have NEVER known the tubing inside the machines to be cleaned, and the nozzles very seldom get removed. I applaud you on what must be a wonderful life, having NEVER been sick since the 50’s, I myself have had many bouts of indegestion, vomiting, and diarrhea over the years, with no apparent cause. Maybe I should drink more soda.

In Hubby’s “How-To’s of Chemotherapy” book, one of the main habits he was told to stop during treatment was drinking ice tea from restaurants. He was actually encouraged to drink fountain drinks instead. The tea urns are seldom cleaned. If cleaned, they aren’t cleaned very well. The fountain machines (supposedly) didn’t need much cleaning since the human factor is reduced in preparation…
Oh well. Learn something new every day, huh?
