Danville City Council is the latest governing board to reject an attempt at banning something that’s not even legal already. Strike FOUR! Now just go away, please.
Danville City Council passes on uranium resolution (Note: I was at the work session, but Denise wrote a good article and deserves the link and the credit.)
There’s not much to add except that every Danville City Council member agreed that this resolution was completely unnecessary. Now will this ridiculous idea finally die a quiet death? Danville City Council got this one right.
Let’s hope that this message has been made clear and will be understood.
Uranium is safely mined all over the world. There is no rational basis to maintain a ban on mining Uranium here in Virginia. Eight billion dollars of Uranium ore could provide a great economic stimulus and shall be an affirmative step towards the much needed energy independence of our nation.

Uranium is not “safely” mined anywhere. It is mined within certain limits, but safely. There are what have been deemed “acceptable” levels of environmental and health damage which they have to adhere to. Are you comfortable with the prospect of perhaps hundred of uranium mines operating all over the state? Because I guarantee you that if one mine is allowed to operate, it will not be the only one. The difference between you pro-uranium nuts and the rest of the people is that those of us who are sane aren’t willing to jeopardize the water supply of millions of people from here to the coast for the relatively small amount of money that southside will realize from uranium.
If you want to throw away your health and future, feel free to, but leave the rest of us out of it.
Those dudes and lady needs education about the problems of uranium mining!
Why did RIFA buy the land on Berry Hill Road and not all the empty land around the Danville Express Way or the Bypass? Did RIFA look at other land?
One answer: No Marline Uranium Leases on other land!
We now have PCB’s in the Dan and Roanoke (Staunton)rivers along with parts of Buggs Island lake that nobody has any idea where they came from in my opinion we need to solve this problem before we decide to create yet another problem.
Uranium mining will prove to be an ecological disaster. The company will take the uranium, make huge profits, and leave us stuck with the consequences. This is such a short-sighted plan. Doesn’t anyone remember history?!
