Thumbs! (9/11/10 edition)

Thumbs UP! Thumbs DOWN! Thumbs all around!

Let’s make it happen!

  • Thumbs UP! to Danville Chief of Police Philip Broadfoot. There was a call for service in my neighborhood Friday night and I went outside to see what was going on. Surprisingly, the chief of the department was out there responding to the call along with the other officers. That’s a good example of leadership and it shows that he’s still willing to do the job that he is responsible for making other people do.
  • Thumbs UP! to “Jed”, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office bloodhound who’s recovering from a broken hip after being thrown out of a deputy’s car which went airborne and flipped over twice. Jed underwent surgery to repair his injuries and Halifax County Sheriff Stanley Noblin said that Jed may actually return to duty within a month. Don’t worry, the deputy had his seat belt on and he’s already returned to duty.

Unfortunately, what goes UP! must go DOWN!

  • Regretfully, I have to give a Thumbs DOWN! to the “Patriot Day” annual ceremony of remembrance at the Danville courthouse plaza. I know that remembering the 9/11 terrorist attacks is important but if you’re going to hold a ceremony about it, do it on the actual day of September 11th and not the day before (Friday). God forbid you wouldn’t want to ruin your weekend by doing it on 9/11.
  • Thumbs DOWN! to the Lynchburg NAACP for trying to play a race card (big surprise there, eh?) in a discussion about making juvenile murderers face adult punishment for their crimes. I don’t give a damn whether a juvenile murderer is black, white or striped. Do the crime, get ready to do the time. Race pimping ain’t pretty.
  • The City of Danville’s Planning Commission is getting a GIANT Thumbs DOWN! for setting up a special public hearing on the new floodplain designation, sending out over 300 notices to affected residents to invite them to the meeting and then not having enough Planning Commission members show up for the special meeting they called to form a quorum. That’s right, folks. Over 30 people showed up for this meeting and nothing was able to get accomplished because there wasn’t enough members present to make the meeting official. Luckily, the city’s staff salvaged the day by meeting with the people who attended to explain the new floodplain information. Speaking about the Planning Commssion’s attendance, there hasn’t been a Planning Commission meeting this year that’s had 100% attendance. In fact, at their annual organizational meeting where they elect the chairman, one of the members even missed that one! If you’re going to serve on a city commission, go to the meetings that you’re holding. If you’re calling a special meeting that potentially affects over 300 city residents, there’s NO EXCUSE not to have enough members present to meet the quorum requirements.

Two UP!’s and three DOWN!’s. Got any of your own? You know what to do.

Reason for the ceremony on Friday was because on Saturday some of the officers and firefighters were at a softball tournament which was named Patriot Day! Most of the ones from the S.O. who organized the Sept 10th event organized the Sept 11th event so they could spend time with other depts – families and the citizens. I can say it was a great day for everyone!

  • observer

i need to correct myself. The event Saturday was called Public Safety Day. The ones inviolved were the Danville Sheriff’s Office who organized the event – Danville Police Dept – Pittsylvania Co Sheriffs Office and the Danville Fire Dept… And speaking of Chief Broadfoot you never know when he may be out and about on the streets. He may give u your next speeding ticket so be alert!!!

  • SouthsideCentral

Ah. I stand corrected. Who would ever think of delaying a softball tournament for something as trivial like a memorial ceremony?

That information makes it a bigger Thumbs DOWN!

  • observer

I would much rather be at a softball game with law enforcement and firefighters than at a parade like Star news was at with politicians and old cars going down a road. What did that have to do with 9-11? I think it was called the Bassett Heritage Festival Parade. It also Had Scooby Doo?

  • SouthsideCentral

The Bassett Heritage Festival Parade had nothing to do with 9/11 (except it happened on the same calendar day), but then nobody said it was supposed to. That being said, your preference of events to attend is not the topic that I was talking about. My point remains that pushing the 9/11 memorial service to 9/10 for convenience just flat-out stinks. The fact that it was supposedly scheduled on another day because of a softball tournament for law enforcement really stinks.

There are plenty of citizens who do not work in public safety who would have appreciated a memorial ceremony in the same fashion as the ones in NYC, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

Having a 9/11 ceremony on 9/10 just isn’t the same.

  • observer

It was not a convenience thing it just happened like that.

  • Watchman

Like they didn’t know what the date was when they set the tournament. Please….I am with SSC on this one. It was crass and disrespectful.

Most of the people involved in the event Friday were Working at PD,SO, FD. They also had School student participating in this event as well. If it were held on Saturday The parents would have been responsible to get the students to the event instead. A lot of effort was put into it. Both events were to honor the men and women who protect and serve the citizens of our area. Get a grip.

  • SouthsideCentral

Fooey. None of these “justifications” in this discussion has changed my mind.

Having the ceremony of the day before the anniversary cheapens it. Final Answer.

Nice Photo on the Star Tribune Web Site. Seems Dan River High School Had Patriot Day on Friday September 10th. Maybe they should have had the students come to School on Saturday to have it. Think so Bruce!

  • SouthsideCentral

Can’t argue with your logic there. I agree 100%. 9/11 happened on 9/11, and not 9/10.

  • Will White

Bruce it is time for a good 5th district update.

  • kelley in virginia

I agree with Will White. Hell hath frozen over.

o/t: new RH TV ad up at his website now

  • Tarheel

Kelly I saw that commercial last night.

    It is a good one, IMO…Especially the lines spoken by Robert himself;

“Washington Is Spending Away Our Future. We Are Spending Money That We Don’t Have, And We’re Borrowing Money That We Can’t Pay Back. I’m Robert Hurt And I Approved This Message Because The Fight To Fix Washington Starts Right Here, Right Now.”

  • Tarheel

    Here is the ad script.

Script For “The Fight To Fix Washington”

Announcer: A Stalled Economy That’s Crushing Virginia Families. The National Energy Tax We Can’t Afford. The Pelosi-Perriello Health Care Plan We Didn’t Want. And Trillions In New Debt.

Robert Hurt: Washington Is Spending Away Our Future. We Are Spending Money That We Don’t Have, And We’re Borrowing Money That We Can’t Pay Back.

Announcer: Robert’s Plan Calls For A Balanced Budget Amendment And Helping Small Businesses That Create Jobs.

Robert Hurt: I’m Robert Hurt And I Approved This Message Because The Fight To Fix Washington Starts Right Here, Right Now.

  • kelley in virginia

    tarheel: i agree

  • kelley in virginia

do we want to start/continue a discussion on happenings in 5thCD politics?

Perriello’s release of internal poll to keep his volunteers excited seems like a move of someone losing by more than 2 points.

  • 2boxers

Thanks for the update on Jed-I’m late reading it. Maybe it makes me a bad human, but I was more worried about the dog.

  • Will White

Wonder how many Democrats were in the poll to come up with that bs number ?

  • kelley in virginia

will, I think Perriello will lose by more than 2 points. what do you think?

  • Will White

Kelley I think we should work like Hurt is 30 points down for the next month. We can never be to sure of anything. In my opinion Hurt will win by 8-12% but in the back of my mind I keep thinking about 2008.

  • kelley in virginia

another agreement! keep making those phone calls; going door to door; putting up signs; fundraising.

make sure you organize a large group to hand out materials & be a show of force at your polls.

  • Will White

Im not really doing much of that these days im letting the younger people do what I did years ago.I do think the Charlotte County unit has been doing alot of work for what I hear.

  • kelley in virginia

charlotte county Republicans have had some big fundraisers. Many in Lunenburg wish the Republican committee here would have done the same.

  • Will White

Did you hear about the endorsement Perriello just got ?

  • kelley in virginia

are you talking about the NRA endorsement?

Robert Hurt votes for 2d amendment for 10 years in the Virginia General Assembly (& has A rating by NRA) & the NRA doesn’t think that is as good as the deal making Perriello does in Congress.

I called the NRA yesterday–not that they care what someone from Lunenburg Co VA thinks–& cancelled my membership over this.

  • Will White

If they both have an A rating why wouldn’t they stay neutral ? Im with you on this Kelley I will cancell my membership today also.

  • kelley in virginia

someone on another blog said that Perriello may have made some deals to help NRA on the DISCLOSE Act. I don’t know.

  • Will White

How can the NRA justify giving a endorsement to Perriello who hasn’t served one full term in office yet when Hurt has been in office for ten years with an A rating and has been endorsed by them in the past?

  • kelley in virginia

will, that is my argument too. 10 years means more than 18 mos as far as commitment.

a friend of mine in Richmond is going to resign his NRA membership over this, too.

  • Republurker

There are a bunch of people resigning NRA membership over this. They (national NRA) are really messing up the local chapters. Bet their local fundraisers will hurt over this.
