Walgreens has stores located all around the Danville area, so it seems logical.
The rumor mill has been flying around the SouthsideCentral region saying that Walgreens is going to open a store in Danville. More unconfirmed rumors say that they have an agreement to purchase customer records from Professional Pharmacy & Commonwealth Pharmacy.
At work today, I talked to Walgreens’ media relations department who said “No Comment”, but you could tell there was a smile in his voice. I called Professional Pharmacy and Commonwealth Pharmacy but nobody “was available for comment” and nobody returned my calls. That’s leading me to put more credence into the rumor. I also spoke with Danville’s economic development office and they said that they have no business dealings with Walgreens at this time.
In the last hour, I’ve read a rumor that says Walgreens will retrofit the existing Professional Pharmacy building on Watson St. I find that hard to believe since the area is extremely run-down and in a non-desirable location for business.
If Walgreens comes to the area, they’ll want an existing customer base to start so that would logically mean buying out independent pharmacies. They’ll want to build a new store in a high-traffic area and won’t have much of a need for the small pharmacies’ existing space.
All of this leads me to a 90% chance that Walgreens will be open in Danville within the next 12 months.
We already have 239403928 CVS stores. Do we really need Walgreens too?
The good think about a Walgreens is they are normally open 24/7. Say you go to the er and are give a prescription at midnight.. no pharmacy is open at that time… OOOPS WalGreens will be if they are in Danville…Good benefits for them to be here in the city by the dan. Closest one now is in Martinsville.
I’m wondering if the outparcel lot just down from the Sonic would be high traffic enough for them. Walgreens tends to want a corner lot on two high traffic streets, and I just don’t see something obvious anywhere in Danville. They could bank on Park and Piedmont being an attractive enough location, but Park is pretty dead every time I’m through there. Maybe they have an agreement to kick maybe Bank of America over to some other property and build on Riverside and Westover, right across from the CVS. I’ve seen a lot of that in other places.
Right across from CVS on West Main. Bank on it. That is Danville’s busiest CVS, so they will move there. Remember, CVS was going to build there when there was an uproar about tearing down the Rec Center. Never could agree on a price, so they stayed with the original plans and tore down Rec Center and built there.
Also, old Shoney’s building is now vacant. They love to build across from CVS’s.
Walgreens purchased the land across from Little Charlies Auto Sales on Piney Forest Rd. They did that several years back.
