Gender A Consideration In Voting? – You Bet!

In my first SC blog post I made the following comments in regards to the candidates for Danville City Council:  “Do you wonder why no females are running? Do you care?” Imagine my surprise that my comments elicited the following response…

“Why in the world would the gender of the candidates even cross your mind? What does that have to do with their qualifications?” “…probably the least intelligent statement I have ever read on this blog.”

Why would gender cross my mind?  Gee, no blinders on my eyes, I’m sorry but they all look like men.  I would notice if they all looked like women.

Why would the gender of a candidate cross my mind? Maybe because the 2010 Census Report shows that 54.4% of the population of  Danville is composed of females.  If females make up more than 50% of the population, and not one female serves on our city council nor is there one female candidate for council why wouldn’t I notice or care?

Now, do I think that the writer of the statements  I mention would fail to consider or notice if all the candidates for council were female-no, that thought will never cross my mind.

Gender absolutely matters. We as women are not being represented.
We will never achieve equality in the workplace, equal pay for equal work and respect if we do not have proper and equal representation at all levels of the political spectrum.

Well we did have Miss Ruby. Till she got sick and passed away . She was a true friend to many!

I don’t give a damn whether my elected leaders have internal or external plumbing. I only want them to lead and be the best.

We all want good leaders-but-haven’t you noticed that men and women go about doing things differently? We have African American males and White males on council-why are women not running for this office? Don’t miss my point. You can’t have any females on council if none run for council. I am not proposing that I would vote for a female simply because she is a female but I would like the opportunity to vote for one! I want the make-up of council to be representative of our City. Women play important roles in our community, why are they not running for City Council?

Good point! I am sure there r good , smart , intelligent women in the city of Danville worth voting for. Besides Ruby, I had forgot: Shirley Mayhew served on council a term or 2!

  • Perhaps no intelligent female wants her name associated with the mess that’s been made. I’ve asked a few females about running and that’s been the response I’ve gotten.
