Who knew? Maybe we need to start a category on obvious things that make headlines. Anyway, this one has a South Boston connection…
Penhook man guilty of making moonshine
Now that’s a pretty good-sized operation… it’s just a shame that the government has to throw people in jail to protect their monopoly on liquor. The ABC board can throw all the “we’re stopping things like this because it can be dangerous if not regulated”, but I’m not buying that one bit. This is clearly a guy who knows what’s doing and obviously has a good client base for his ahem… “small business”.
One thing in this story caught my eye, though…
In July 2012, special agents with the ABC’s Bureau of Law Enforcement received a tip that a white male had purchased a large amount of sugar at a wholesale store in South Boston, according to prosecutor Dwight Rudd.
There’s one wholesale store in South Boston, and it’s Supply Line. I’d love to know where that “tip” came from because I’m wondering who actually gives a damn about moonshine being produced. It’s bad enough that the government is capturing our phone calls and data, but I’ve got be honest that it quite disturbs me that somebody is monitoring purchases made at Supply Line.
Now let’s go to the funny parts of this…
Matherly’s stepdaughter, Debra Nicole Walker, was also found at the still site on May 6, Rudd said. She was sitting on top of the still.
Whee-doggy! Look at me, paw! I’m a-riding the still! Hoowee! Oh yeah, a special mention to the prosecutorial overreach of charging her with a felony count of making moonshine knowing full well that the charge would be a bargaining chip for a stupid misdemeanor crime of possession on moonshine.
Virginia’s law enforcement community could be doing a lot more on other real threats to public safety than dealing with this victimless so-called crime.
