I’m thinking it’s time for some more RandomThoughts. Walk slowly into my mind, please…
RandomThoughts are best presented on a Big Board…
- Am I the only one who hasn’t heard much about the Virginia Cantaloupe Festival so far? It’s 16 days away.
- Really? Sunday’s Memorial Day ceremony at the Halifax County War Memorial was the “black one” while Monday’s ceremony was the “white one”? Memorial Day ceremonies are self-segregated? Somebody tell me that’s not true, please.
- Has anybody seen any presence or coverage by WSLS-TV (NBC Channel 10) in Danville in a long time?
- Nine months later, we still don’t what in the heck happened down at South Boston’s Cherokee Tobacco. On August 22nd, 2013, the place was raided by federal agents. What’s going on?
- If the River District Streetscaping Project is now over, why were there eight Public Works employees out there blocking pedestrian traffic while doing something?
- Downtown Danville, you still have a parking problem. It’s not as bad as before but it’s still there.
- I find it hard to believe that any business travelers stay at the Hotel Leeland.
- The Nor-Dan post office is now a tobacco store? Since when?
- The Market Square shopping center is now pretty much just a Food Lion grocery store. Sad.
- Speaking of Food Lion, their semi-new pre-cut meat program is horrible. As for their value-added pre-packaged meats, I’m not paying $9.00 a pound for bacon wrapped asparagus. Neither is anybody else.
That’s a lot of Thoughts. They sure were Random. Comments are open for you down below!
Oddly enough, my Stephanie made LOADS of bacon-wrapped asparagus in the past 2 weeks. For nowhere NEAR that price point. Just saying. lol GOOD local/regional food for thought! And my 2 cents would be, what is happening with the horrific ash dumping in the local water supply?? I see co-workers get water from the drinking fountain at work and WANT to say, ‘NOOO!!” But I don’t have any info/facta to back that up, so what’s up there?? Good points all around.\
Worry not, the drinking water always was safe and continues to be so. The coal ash spill is dead! Look back a few days for that article.
Random responses: Midtown, Old Dutch and maybe Piggly Wiggly seem to be the only places left to get good meat these days…and fish prices have gone through the roof. And the Lope Festival is off the radar since moving from Turbeville. Parking will continue to get worse downtown, and that’s a good problem to have to fix. Looks like drainage problems we didn’t have downtown, we now have…after installing a storm sewer system that we never had or needed. Random indeed.
I’m just sad there is no posting about the Cinnamon Bun Man being in Hali.
I didn’t want people to think I was always thinking of food.
(not that there’s anything wrong with that)
Uh oh. Any mention of the Hotel Leeland brings an angry response from the guy who owns it. Expect a finger-wagging diatribe about how nice it is and how he and his wife have created a travelers mecca downtown… pay no attention to the seedy looking semi-permanent “guests” who hang out in front of the building. Expect said diatribe soon.
Bruce, if you like real Home Cooked Mexican Food there is a small Restaurant up the street from Steaks on Square on the left by a Mexican Grocery Store.
They make every thing fresh and the Food is really good, not like the other Tex-Mex where all is fresh frozen…. Service is little slow but the wait is worth it….Give it a try
Good point about channel 10…I do not think they provide coverage of this area any longer.
So here’s a random thought for your random thoughts on downtown Danville…..What is the state of the Masonic Temple? You could bring in 100 city managers or development folks from around the country….I guarantee that 99% of them would tell you that for downtown Danville to really hop, it needs a complete redevelopment of that building. It’s simply too prominent a feature to redevelop around. The City has tried downtown redevelopment for decades, but if it is serious, it’s got to find a way to broker a deal to get the Masonic Temple sold to a developer with major capital. If you ever talk to folks who visit Danville, you will find that a number of them love the building and are disappointed that it seems vacant.
You can get good meat in Dan Vegas at Ridge Farm Natural Foods Market out on Westover. He has local beef, pork, and chicken products and the prices are fairly reasonable. For example, I bought some beef off of him last weekend (ground meat and stew beef). It came from Dahnmar Farms in Caswell County. It’s grass fed and I think it was like 6.50/lb which isn’t bad. I think he also has locally grown organic produce and he’s got some other things like gluten free stuff, etc. He’s a bit eccentric but a nice guy.
