Into my mind we go…
Can you say Big Board? I thought you could!
- This Danville Public Schools situation gets more bizarre every day.
- It’s interesting how the Danville school board sets this “called meeting” at 4:45 PM. That’s a convenient time so that it can be all finished before people get off of work and get there. That’s not unintentional, folks.
- Adding to that, the Register & Bee publishes an article that’s nothing but spin by the human resources head, Juliet Jennings. It’s got plenty of lies in it but nobody challenges anything that the school system personnel say. Whatever happened to tough questioning?
- People are complaining about the “No Umbrellas” rule at the Harvest Jubilee concerts. Every amphitheater concert venue I’ve ever been to has the same policy because umbrellas ruin the line of sight when you’re sitting on the lawn.
- Danville’s share of the Community Development Block Grants awarded yesterday? $ 0.00. Yay Blight Eradication Program! Hmph.
- Local folks here might very well drive 30 miles to Destination Downtown South Boston’s outdoor concert tonight with “The Worx”… if they knew anything about it.
- Biscuitville and their pimento cheese and bacon biscuit. Perfection, baby.
- I certainly hope that Danville government will show the same enthusiasm at every new business opening that they’ve shown for Moon River Thai Bistro. It’s the first ribbon-cutting I’ve ever seen where the business owner wasn’t there but her “business consultant” was.
- Danville’s public library loans out e-books and offers free digital magazines to library card holders. That’s a deal that more people should take advantage of.
And that’s some RandomThoughts for now. More coming up on SouthsideCentral!
Danville is always a follower…never a leader. And that is sad.
What are these lies, Bruce? This seems like an excellent topic for you to handle if the fish wrapper won’t.
I’m working on that article, sir.
Shoulda known.
Oh and I agree re: Moon River. I see Nick’s Grill is open on the corner of the Union Street Bridge and Memorial. I’m so glad to be rid of the “DODG” sign. Where’s the love, Lee Vogler et all?
Lee, ABC 13 just did a story today on Nick’s, as well as the new grocery store on Ridge Street that’s also having their “soft” opening now. I gave comments on both of them and will be there for the ribbon cutting as soon as the city tells me date and time. I’m glad to see several new businesses opening in and around our River District. The diversity they bring is even better.
So why did you guys run off Bronx Bagel Boys?
They went down the crapper because they didn’t pay their taxes. Search for Bronx Boy here or at HalifaxCentral.com
I remember it as they had pretty considerable city support and then picked a fight with the city over not being able to co-sponsor some beer event and then suddenly their business went away, their food got crazy stale, and then they couldn’t pay their taxes. Between BBB and Cibo, I am convinced that no fast casual food model can serve panini sandwiches successfully. They take too long. Cibo’s took about 1/3 the time that BBB did, but they were still too slow.
Considering Bronx Boys went out of business before I even moved back here, I’m assuming you realize I wasn’t involved with “you guys” or any “running off” that may or may not have occurred…
Nobody watches that station. Heh.
What’s funny is that I can name check Lee Vogler and actually get a reply from the man himself. I have to agree with Bruce, though — nobody watches ABC.
Lee, I’m a faithful reader of Southside Central. Of course I’ll respond when I’m able to 🙂
I appreciate that. It’s why I went and dropped your name. I also wanted to make sure people knew about Nick’s. My Iranian coworker is definitely going to be weighing in on this whole Persian food thing.
Oh and Zaxby’s soon enough! We just need a burrito place downtown on main or in the VC location.
The VC location is as cursed as the Hotel Leeland Restaurant Of Doom space.
I think that’s soon going to change. We’re there. The firemen will be there in a second and a half when they finish that building. The apartments in the Smith Seeds Building are at full capacity. The guys who work in the warehouse surely have to eat too. With the right concept in that spot, I think a crowd is forming where it can have success. I’d prefer it not be the burrito thing, though. I want somebody to open a non-chain burrito place on the corner of Main and Union where Love Wig used to be. Main Street needs an eatery a block, and I think that would fit in nicely with Dellannos, Main Street Coffee Emporium, and Jake’s.
Did you feed that story to Adamson and Rosenbaum?
Was at Moon River last Night. Had a Good Dinner, Wish them well.
How was business?
Business was good, Restaurant was full at 7 O’clock. Bar Area is kind of Small. 6 People waiting to be seated when We left
How long do you think the Moon River restaurant will last in Danville?
How long does $50,000 last in the restaurant business? I’m not saying it will fail, but I’d think that’s the critical period. My guess is that’s something like 8-10 months, but I know not too much about how such affairs are run.
I hope the City Councilors are happy with themselves. 50K to a restaurant instead of a lower utility rate. Think about it citizens…..
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Different funding sources. $50K is nothing to a $9M electric fund deficit
Well, when you consider that the Utility Dep’t is depended upon to donate a few million to the General Fund, I don’t think I’m wrong. True or false, does the Utility Dep’t contribute to the General Fund? Did the 50K come from the General Fund Budget? If so, could the Utility Dep’t decrease its contribution to the General Fund by 50K if it wasn’t spent on the restaurant?
I’ll look into that. However, $50K is an irrelevant number to the utility situation sad to say.
So the city gives $50,000 of our money to the Thai restaurant. Ridiculous at so many levels. Can Southside Central ask the economic development office for a list of every restaurant it has given our money to? It would be a point of tremendous public interest, and obviously the rah-rah fish wrapper would not touch the subject.
I have a lot of skepticism about that decision as well, but I will say that Thai could be the sort of food popular enough for people to go out of their way to get. If it drives people to The North and other development up on North Main, it could be money well spent. If it’s a way for Danville to have Thai food for a couple years and becomes the next Bronx Boy flash in the pan (I don’t put Cibo on the list because while the concept was flawed the owners did reboot and so far so good there).
I do think a lot of transparency is called for, specifically because we now know the City is on the hook for Mainland’s folly and GOK. I guess we should expect more rate increases to make up for that $2 million about to be owed to the Tobacco Commission next year.
Why would they schedule a meeting at the end of the hour…..is it goin to be downtown at central office?
It’s a weird meeting whatever it is. It has to be something that can’t keep or that the old board desperately wants to do before the new board takes over. On that theory while Bruce has theorized it’s some sort of parting of the ways with Dr. Newsome if he has buried the hatchet with the old board and there are fears about the new one embracing him, they could be signing him to some sort of contract extension with a poison pill in it (like a termination not for specific cause allowed in the contract results in immediate payment of all salary for the newly extended five year contract or something like that). Or maybe it is about Principals. The Board could feel strongly they don’t want to leave GW without a full principal. Who knows.
