I spent a great evening over in Rockingham County on Friday night, so it’s time for a Thumbs! article on what was good and bad about the experience.
If you don’t know the rules, you’ll figure it out as we go… so I need a Big Board!
- Thumbs UP! to the Reidsville Downtown Corporation and Market Square for a terrific cooperative effort to pull events like Friday night off without a hitch. They continue to get better and better, with this combination of the Cruise-In and the Reidsville Pops concert of Eric & the Chill Tones being the best to date. The Danville’s Harvest Jubilee committee could learn a lot about the “Fridays at the Crossing” series by following the lead of these groups. Thumbs UP! to Eric Chilton and the band as well. I had no idea that WFMY’s meteorologist had that kind of talent off-camera. Somebody needs to book them for a show in SouthsideVA soon.
- Thumbs UP! to Reidsville’s Market Square as well. The city took a chance four years ago and transformed a vacant lot into multi-use amphitheater that has really added to their downtown revitalization.
- Thumbs UP! to the Reidsville Police Department for an excellent job on keeping things safe while being almost completely invisible to the people there. That kind of skill level demands a high degree of professionalism and they pulled it off perfectly.
- Thumbs UP! to the downtown businesses that stay open late on these events. They’re smart enough to know that people from out of the area come in for events and a lot of those people spend money. They also learn about what Reidsville’s downtown has and that is going to bring the same people back. A small Thumbs DOWN! for the ones that don’t stay open because for people like me, this would be one of the few chances that I have to go inside these places. I could see two or three things that I’d like to see inside Kathye’s Pawn Shop, but that’s not going to happen now.
- You’ll never believe that I’m saying this. I don’t believe I’m saying this. Thumbs UP! to WGSR-TV for learning through experience and making the TV show coverage of the Cruise-In almost transparent. They’ve figured out how to strategically place their cameras so that the wiring doesn’t go all over the streets and they’ve made the production look even better by ensuring a steady stream of cars to come through.
- Although it may seem that I have a fixation for Cafe 99… OK, I do. Terrific businesses deserve to have their praises sung. We reviewed the restaurant four years ago and everything in the review still holds true. Dav Gerrells and his staff prepare terrific meals at terrific prices. It’s truly worth the drive from anywhere in Southside for a terrific lunch. Thumbs UP! to everything about the restaurant!
My goodness. I’m out of Thumbs! Can you tell I had a terrific time? We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral!
