Ugh. So many things going on but I promised a quick recap and thoughts article on the “Outsider/Insider” art show that was held Friday, July 25th on Craghead Street. Let’s get it started!
If you want to see the original article with lots of photos, here it is.
Comments and thoughts call for a Big Board…
- One word: Awesome.
- The theme of the show was simple on one level and intriguing on other levels. There are perceived Outsiders & Insiders in the art world, but that’s also true in the realm of religion. I caught on to that alternate meaning of the theme quickly and it could be seen in a lot of the works of art.
- Grace & Main is an amazing group of people who come from all walks of life and political viewpoints. Find out more at their Facebook page.
- I also noticed that this art show was a perfect way that some of these old warehouses can be put to use in non-conventional ways. A few wooden pallets and some storage racks transformed a dusty old unused warehouse into a nice art gallery for the evening. The potential is there for much more of the same type of inexpensive retrofitting, and then you’ve got a possible theater.
- No, I wasn’t artistic enough to come up with that idea myself. Spark Schmitt is truly a genius in the field of the arts. All arts. You could see his eyes light up whenever anybody asked him any questions about anything. Find him. Meet him. You’ll be amazed at the positive vibes that you will get from him.
- Joshua Hearne & Rebecca Warren will probably try to deflect these compliments, but I don’t care. They pulled everything together to make this art show work and to also show the hidden meaning inside it.
- It was good to see the turnout for the show. I was highly impressed that Telly Tucker, the new director of economic development, walked down to take a look at the show. I really am liking his style. Councilman James Buckner and school board vice-chair Terri Hall also were in the audience.
- Finally, it was good to see the wide variety of artwork on display. We went from simple 4X6 photos clipped to a clothesline all the way to metal sculptures. It was all-inclusive which also tied into the deeper meaning of the theme.
There you have it. Sorry for the delays, but we’re clearing out our backlog this week. We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral!
I hate that I forgot to go to this. I am so sorry that I missed this. I would have loved to seen all of this in person. Sparky and Rebecca are both great people! Gosh I must make the next one!
