We’re underway. This is the last meeting before school starts for the students. The board is dealing with disciplinary actions already? Sheesh. (I talked with Chairman Ed Polhamus and found out this disciplinary action came from summer school.)
Andy Thacker recognizes Governor’s Summer School participants. This was held at Chatham High School. Three students tell what they learned. Drama, art history and dance among other subjects. 36 DPS students participated this year.
It’s quite refreshing to see the school board members’ expressions during this speech. You can tell by their smiles that they really do care about the children, and their talents. Sigh… After making this observation one member takes out their phone and checks messages while the kids are talking. Thud.
Over 150 students also did a “Camp Invention” program at Johnson elementary school.
Public comment time. Beverly Abbott of the Danville Education Association speaks. Bowling event on Saturday for teachers. Although Carrie Ashe, Doris Wilson are in the audience, they don’t speak to the board. Greg Hairston shows up after the comment section. Is this the “community outrage” that was promised by Hairston?
Personnel recommendations with Juliet Jennings next. Hiring process continues. A few resignations for teachers for extenuating circumstances. Names are never mentioned during this procedure. One teacher was noted by Jennings at starting at a higher pay rate and she explained that the teacher had experience and post secondary education to match the skills needed.
Woodberry Hills elementary school principal has resigned effective August 1st.?! New principal will be Sandra “Sandy” Andrews effective tomorrow morning. That’s going to be tough. The board is working out their retreat day for 8/28. The board is going over their retreat goals.
Unfortunately, our time’s up here. We’re heading to City Hall Council for the council meeting. Once they’re done, we’ll stop back here to see if this has finished.
ADDED: The school board meeting is finishing as I got back. Closed session is coming next, and only the disciplinary hearing will be voted on. We’re done here.
