That kind of mortgage fraud was hardly unique. When I was in law school in Richmond, we looked at moving between Richmond and Fredericksburg because that’s where my wife was working. We were gleefully told we could have a loan of up to something like $300,000 in a week and could buy a near mansion on Lake Anna, paying only the interest on the loan until our $300,000 mansion appreciated to double its price and we’d be able to sell it for free. We looked at each other, concluded that made no sense at all, and walked away. That was in 2006. When 2008 hit, we completely understood what led to the crash.
