The GWHS at Martinsville boys basketball game was called and forfeited after a melee in the gym on Friday night. Details are sketchy right now, but here’s what we have so far.
Here’s what we know: The game was being played in the Martinsville middle school gym and was sold out. The game was a choppy one during the first half with a lot of fouls being called, including an on-court double technical foul. Martinsville led at the half but GW took the lead in the second half. With about four minutes to play in the fourth quarter and GW holding a lead, a GW player made a move for a layup and was fouled hard by a Martinsville player. Those two players began to fight and that’s when members of the crowd started storming the court. Police and coaches tried to get the situation under control. Players were sent to the locker rooms and the gym was cleared out. We have confirmed that Martinsville police made three arrests.
We’ll update this story if we get more information.
Stay classy folks
What was the race of the thugs involved?
Unknown on that. I hope Martinsville police will issue a statement on Saturday.
Yeah because that’s really important…
What’s the big deal? They fight at school all the time. They don’t get disciplined because they are athletes. What else do you expect? They are being taught this behavior.
Race matters because if the “thugs involved” are Caucasian, then they’re really not thugs. They were more than likely reacting out in the heat of the moment or they ran for safety. Either way, they shouldn’t be faced with any type of punishment. After all, I’m most certain that their parents did an outstanding job raising their children. All of the blacks involved most definitely have not had any type of home training, and should be expelled and thrown in jail. Then all will be right with the world and Danville. Oh, replace all the black players with white ones. That should solve EVERYTHING!
Dumb ass
I think the person you just personally attacked did a wonderful job of satirizing the point behind the question about race.
Lee Smallwood, thanks for recognizing my intention.
DAN WHO YOU CALLING A THUG? AND WHY ARE TRYING TO MAKE THIS RACIAL. YOU ARE A RACIST! AND I DONT LIKE IT. I AM OFFENDED.
Leonard? That you?
Just like Danville. Thanks for representing people of Danville so well.
Until we demand discipline in our schools this behavior will continue to spill over. We can no longer expect nor wait for the parents of these undisciplined kids … to to teach what is correct behavior. Most of these parents don’t know themselves! DPS must teach these kids the consequences of their actions. No exceptions… No excuses…. If we continue to allow the fighting, disrespect, and lack of accountability in our schools …. It will continue to define Danville!
Martinsville Bulletin has a story about this today. Martinsville forfeited the game and tapes are being reviewed to determine if any and what kind of discipline will be administered.
The conduct of some of these posts are worse than the actual fight that happened last night! What does it matter what race they were?
huh?
This is not a race issue… It’s a behavior issue
I had a great show there last Sat.
I didn’t know about that. You should have advertised it here on SouthsideCentral.com
So sad and embarrassing for Danville and Martinsville!

I hope the players will be held accountable on both teams!! Suspend all games from these two teams …. Not just the fans!!! wasn’t it a bunch of players at the end of school last year that vandalized the school before graduation?
Those kids last year were forgiven and told to sin no more.
You are right David, race does not matter. What matters is the conduct of the athletes involved, the fans who rushed the court and of the ones arrested is not acceptable. They can punish players, and I believe they should. It must be a punishment that means something. Sure people get excited but one must learn to control ones self. What they do as athletes reflects on the school they represent. Some “fans” were arrested (according to reports in R&B and I believe at least 2 were from Danville), for behavior towards police officers. What about the fans who stormed the floor? The ones mentioned in R&B are too old to be students. The two teams will likely play again soon in the R&B shootout. Will they ban fans from attending when the to teams play again? Will they put players on the bench? Maybe an embarrassment for each team to suffer will let them know that you do not embarrass the institutions you represent. Just what exactly teaches the athlete the importance of good sportsmanship, which can be carried with them all of their life. And, what does it take to teach fans that they too have some lessens to learn too.
The Roanoke Times has an article as well. I don’t understand what race has to do with this either.
My link did not post. http://www.roanoke.com/sports/high_schools/fight-at-martinsville-george-washington-boys-game-leads-to-suspension/article_c9471662-1800-53b4-8bea-527d149a0e13.html
Martinsville has stepped up and suspended players. You think GW will do that without pressure from outside? VHSL?
How about the football player in a fight at GW that couldn’t be suspended because they were in the playoffs?
GW will do the right thing, teach the kids they can get away with bad behavior.
