RandomThoughts! (12/26/2014)

My goodness, the last RandomThoughts article was on Dec 3rd. I am thinking. I am thinking randomly.

RandomThoughts belong on a Big Board!

  • I know it’s “surplus city property” now, but wouldn’t it make financial sense to relocate the Danville Public Schools’ central office to one of the closed schools like Cedarbrook or Glenwood? They’ve been paying rent on their downtown office building for a long time now.
  • Repeated from a @sosidecentral Tweet earlier this week (by the way, follow us on Twitter!): “It’s good to see that WSET has named their reporters for the 1st quarter of 2015. #DontUnpackYourBags
  • When the newspaper runs a “People are winding up their shopping on Christmas Eve” story, it’s a sure sign that it’s a slow news period.
  • What did we do before the era of gift cards?
  • I went to Ascension Lutheran Church to see the Chrismon Tree on Monday. Sadly, less than 10 other people visited that night.
  • Ed Newsome sure got the hell out of Danville never to return, didn’t he?
  • Yeah, they’re a SouthsideCentral sponsor… but I’m telling you that we had dinner at Danville’s Texas Steakhouse Tuesday night and it was terrific. I had a steak and my sister had their chicken tenders. 2 meals and an appetizer from their special 2 for $22 menu. Can’t beat it, folks.
  • It was cool to see that Danville Mall had live entertainment during the holiday season.
  • Remember the Rexall drug store in Riverside Shopping Center?

That’s some RandomThoughts! for now. We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral!

https://www.linkedin.com/pub/dir/ed/newsome Look at the 4th Ed Newsome. In other words, he appears to be unemployed. He started one of those “consultant” services in about 2009.

Oh, I missed: he is also in charge of “education” for the company that runs tour busses in Washington, DC.

well lawd—why would he want to work for $$$?? ! he is probably getting a pension from Maryland and his payout from DPS. he probably got other income in his bank account

Bruce—Townes Lea is suppose to need a new roof. Yes makes sense for DPS central office personnel to occupy one of the 2 or 3 schools sitting empty. I wonder if that happened would there be opposition ————> if the buildings can get used as administration headquarters then why couldn’t it have remained a school ?? any thoughts? so instead they rent.

Couldn’t agree more about utilizing the existing capacity rather than renting the Downtown space for the school system.

Also…Is this the beginning of the end for the Register and Bee? I mean…outside of the sports section, it seems like the paper’s getting down to 2 local stories a day. Obviously, it’s a slow news period. However, it is concerning to see almost no local content. I think you mentioned that you expect it to become a by-product of the Lynchburg and Greensboro papers earlier this year.

Another random observation/question: What is going on with Main St. Coffee Emporium? They’re closed on Saturdays. They also were closed on the 26th. Obviously, everyone needs a vacation. And that’s cool. But they were also closed the day after Thanksgiving. Those are supposed to be 2 of the busiest days of the year. I like their product, I wish they were open more. I would have purchased coffee on both days.
