Let’s take a look around the internet and see some stories that have caught my eye. It’s QuickHits! time.
Get that Big Board ready!
- Let’s hear it for the Rocky Mount Police Department!
- The bizarre South Boston YMCA board of directors “rents” a CEO. It’s not Marcus Hargrave. He’s still fired.
- When your defense attorney says “The defendant’s track record is not the best”, you’re going to jail.
- The judge was nice. He suspended 100 years of the man’s prison sentence, only leaving him 755 years to serve.
- Goodbye, WPCM’s beach and oldies music. Hello, country music. (Like there’s not enough of that on local radio now…)
That’s five QuickHits! for you on a Sunday afternoon. We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral!
Once WPCM got their FM translator signal on the air, I wondered how long it would be before they abandoned “beach and oldies”… a niche market that is overwhelmingly confined to AM these days, along with sports, sports talk, and Hispanic radio. WPCM was giving a small number of people a format that they couldn’t get on FM, and those people were willing to listen to that music on a scratchy, distorted, mono AM signal. If they keep their local flavor alive and program it well, they’ll win many Burlington listeners who were tuned in to country stations from the Triad, and their overall listener numbers will increase. It’s hard to go wrong with country music in this neck of the woods. I say it was a good move, despite the fact that I hate country music!
People who really want to hear that format can always listen online to 94.9 The Surf from North Myrtle Beach. They’re probably the best formatted Carolina Beach Music radio station on the planet, and smart devices have made the old geographical boundaries of radio signals practically meaningless.
Jim, You are dead on correct. Have you been in radio? ;>)
