You’ll notice that the headline doesn’t say “LIVE!” and that’s because I believe it’s potentially unsafe to hold tonight’s regularly scheduled meeting and I’m not going. I’ll just tell you what will happen so you can protest with me by staying at home like they should have done.
Let’s start it off with SouthsideCentral’s position on holding the meeting as scheduled.
SouthsideCentral strongly condemns the decision of Danville City Council to have their regularly scheduled meeting at 7 PM tonight. Although most roads are clear for travel now, sub-freezing temperatures have the potential of leaving icy patches on the roads tonight. SouthsideCentral believes it is unsafe and unwise to put the City Council Members, city staff and interested citizens at potential risk when there is no urgent or time-sensitive matters that have to be handled tonight. We strongly urge all Danville City Council members to not attend tonight’s meeting so that it will be cancelled for lack of a quorum.
So there. Let’s tell you what will happen at the meeting.
- Sherman Saunders will call the meeting to order. Hopefully, four or less council members will be present and the meeting will be cancelled due to lack of a quorum… but I doubt it.
- Lee Vogler will do the prayer and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
- The minutes will be approved.
- No citizens will speak.
- Four citizens will be appointed to boards.
- First reading of an ordinance to spend some additional “unused” money to help in the completion of the Riverwalk Trail.
- A request for VDOT to approve matching fund for a pedestrian/bike lane on the MLK bridge will pass unanimously.
- An around the horn session that will praise Public Works for snow removal efforts. We’ll watch the around the horn session to see if anybody piggybacks on Lee Vogler’s statement two weeks ago.
- Adjournment and smoke break time.
- Work session will have Rick Drazenovich talk about what it would take to convert some city vehicles to compressed natural gas for fuel, and Michael Adkins will go over the monthly financial statement.
- A closed session is on the agenda for legal counsel, but since the coal ash attorney meeting that was scheduled for 5:30 PM was cancelled, this one may be cancelled as well.
The. End.
See, you didn’t miss anything at all. Well, except some photos and commentary… but this was going to be a quick and boring meeting anyway. We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral!
Correct on items 1 thru 7 and no takers on item 8. Glad I stayed home!
Perhaps Council is just setting an example (or following suit) with other city employees who had to report to work on their regular schedule regardless of weather conditions.
If so, it’s a bad policy. Unless you’re “essential” (and that description should be held to strict scrutiny), I firmly believe that any employer should not take punitive action against an employee who is trying their best to get to work safely.
Can you explain what “essential” employees are? If they are non-essential on snow and bad weather days, are they not non-essential every other day?
Too much over reaction to a little bit of winter. This should be the third snow and we should have four more. People are too soft and need to depend less on government.
City council needs to get that coal ash out of the water.
There is no coal ash in the water. Even if it was, Danville City Council couldn’t do a damned thing about it.
Sadly, some people are stupid enough to fall for trolling like this.
You tasted the water lately?
Somebody’s ash has been in it.
Stink Bug Water !! eye hope the ccccccccccccold AND winter weather will eradicate the stink bug water…tired of smelling it
