Today, we have a statement from Virginia Organizing regarding Thursday night’s Danville City Council vote to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the Sutherlin Mansion.
From Virginia Organizing:
Danville, Va.—In response to Danville City Council’s vote to remove the Confederate flag from public property, Virginia Organizing has issued the following statements:
“I am so glad that our city stands on the side of justice and equality in deciding to take down the Confederate flag,” said Matt Bailey, a leader in the Danville Chapter of Virginia Organizing. “In the time I spent canvassing to encourage support for this decision, almost everyone we talked to wanted the flag removed and were very excited to contact City Council directly. This is a great day for the City of Danville!”
Johnny Mayo, a member of the Virginia Organizing State Governing Board and local Danville Chapter leader, voiced the statewide organization’s support for this decision.
“I am proud that City Council listened to the overwhelming majority of citizens who are happy to see the flag come down. Virginia Organizing believes in the dignity and respect of all people. We believe in the building of strong communities, and the Confederate flag does not do that in Danville, or anywhere in the state.”
As stated above, the comment section is open below this article and SouthsideCentral will be glad to publish opposing viewpoints. There’s a “Contact Us!” link at the top of every SouthsideCentral page for you to send in your submissions. We’re glad to provide an unedited outlet for people and organizations to express their opinions.
Virginia organizing like to bill itself as non-partisan. That is nothing but a bald faced lie. Of course they did not find any support for keeping the flag. They never canvass in certain neighborhoods of Danville., They have been here several years and claim to encourage voter registration. They even claim they go door to door, yet they red-line where they do it. Do you think they spend more time canvasing door to door in Windsor Heights or Woodside Village?
