I’m quite proud of my Thumbs! and you should be proud of them too.
UP! = Good and DOWN! = Bad. That’s simple enough, so let’s bring on the Big Board!
- Thumbs UP! to the River District Festival. Yep, they advertised with SouthsideCentral (so that’s an Thumbs UP! for that in itself. Heh.). But the real reason that I enjoyed the RDF is that there was something for everybody this year as they expanded it to three days. Thursday’s River District Festival takeover of North Union Street was a great event. There were artists and entertainment all in a part of Downtown Danville that gets little foot traffic. That set the tone for a very active three days that ended with a well-attended concert with Tank as the headliner. The RDF has great growth potential and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can pull off next year.
- Thumbs UP! to all the businesses that have opened up in the River District in the past few months. Lizzy Lou Boutique, Bobby Carlsen Photography, A La Carte Home Furnishing, River District Barbershop, The 616 restaurant, Me’s Burgers & Brews, Chestnut Lane Furniture (reopening)… have I forgotten any? Boom, people. The River District project is working. There’s the proof.
- Thumbs DOWN! to the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History board of directors. They get a “TOO SOON” for getting an op-ed in the Register & Bee newspaper trying to justify their advocacy for the removal of the Confederate flag from the museum grounds. They’re opinion piece was a shameless way to sell their position on the issue and to not sell the building itself. Needless to say, the comment section of the R&B has became the expected trainwreck between flag supporters and flag opponents with name calling and ridicule making most of the commenters look like idiots. And to top it off, the opinion piece didn’t even have the names of the board members on it. If you want to know who the board members are, here’s the link for you. Honestly, board members, what the hell were you thinking? All you’ve done is throw gas on the fire that was slowly starting to go out by itself. Well played. And by “well played”, I mean “dumbass decision”.
Oh well. That “All Thumbs UP!” streak had to end sometime. We’ve got more coming up on SouthsideCentral!
“the comment section of the R&B has became the expected trainwreck between flag supporters and flag opponents with name calling and ridicule making most of the commenters look like idiots. “Which comments are you speaking of here ,I do not see any name calling name or ridiculing in any comments.
When I wrote the article, there was the typical Wells Miller condescension. I also saw someone use “butt buddies”.
