We already know that the famous “HOME” part of the HOME OF DAN RIVER FABRICS sign will appear at this year’s Community Holiday Light Show at Danville’s Ballou Park. Now we know where the HOME letters will call um… “home” after that event is over.
On Thursday, Danville’s River District Design Commission will be asked to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness for Danville’s Industrial Development Authority. The IDA owns the lot at 500 Main Street (the location of the former Downtowner hotel). The IDA is asking for permission to put the HOME letters there and light them up with red neon tubing.
Here’s the official paperwork on the request…
This application was turned in after the deadline, so the River District Design Commission will have to vote to hear this application on Thursday. That addition to the agenda will easily pass. After that, this Certificate of Appropriateness request should easily pass as well. There may be some questioning about the neon lighting, but in this case I don’t think that will be a problem based on the special use and history of these famous letters.
SouthsideCentral will be at the River District Design Commission meeting on Thursday and we’ll let you know what happens.
