SouthsideCentral was at Monday’s RIFA meeting and almost nothing happened! But hey, that didn’t stop us from getting some photos. Let’s take a look at what did happen in this article…
We’re at Danville Regional Airport for today’s meeting. At the first meeting of every calendar year, the RIFA board elects new officers. This year was a little different because all of Pittsylvania County’s 2015 RIFA members are gone. Brenda Bowman & Coy Harville didn’t run for reelection and James Snead was defeated. New Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors chairman Jessie Barksdale put himself, Bob Warren and Elton Blackstock on the RIFA board.
Every year, the chairmanship rotates between the city and the county, with 2016 being the county’s turn. Jessie Barksdale was elected chairman, and Danville’s Sherman Saunders is this year’s vice-chairman. On a board with only 4 votes (two members are alternates), the chairmanship isn’t really a big deal because I’ve never seen a split vote on an issue. Danville City Clerk Sue DeMasi is reelected as board clerk and Danville Finance Director Mike Adkins is reelected as treasurer. Those two always get those roles.
After a quick 4-0 vote for a resolution that protects a potential industry’s trade secrets from being revealed through FOIA actions, the board goes into a closed session for economic development. They return about 30 minutes later and take no action. The around the horn session is everybody welcoming the three new county members to the board…and we’re done!
We’ll wrap this article up with a bunch of photos from the meeting.
