Spectrum Medical’s Announcement

The doctors and staff from Danville Orthopedic Clinic held a press conference in front of the River District Tower building project on Friday to announce a new name for the multiple medical offices. SouthsideCentral is glad to publish senior partner Dr. Mark Hermann’s speech unedited so that our readers can read it in its entirety.

We’re at Main Street Plaza, and Dr. Mark Hermann is about to speak.

Here’s Mark Hermann’s speech…

Good Afternoon! My name is Mark Hermann and I am the senior partner at the Danville Orthopedic clinic and am speaking to you on behalf of our entire staff to share exciting news regarding our business. We appreciate all of you who have taken time today to participate in our announcement.

Originally located on Watson St, the Danville Orthopedic Clinic was founded in 1948 by Dr. Prentice Kinser. Long before the challenges of managed care, bundled payments, Electronic medical records, and preapproval, Dr. Kinser practiced alone for nearly 20 years before taking partners in the late 1960’s. Over the ensuing years, the Danville Orthopedic Clinic has been the home of past orthopedic surgeons Don Boyer, Robert Musgrave, Alton Gross, Bill Ogden, David Dye, Tom Wagner, Tullio Coccia, Larry Cohen, Tom Connolly, and Ron Hodges. The practice participated as part of the Duke Orthopedic Clinical staff for many years before Duke consolidated its clinical rotations. During the years preceding my arrival in 1990, DOC had grown and gained the reputation as a reliable high quality Orthopedic practice in Southside Virginia.

In 1990 I arrived to join Dr’s Gross, Coccia, Kramer and Physician assistant, Gary Thompson, at the South Main location across from what was then Danville Memorial Hospital. I came to Danville with my wife and newborn daughter, Mackenzie, recognizing the exciting potential of this medical community and especially the possibilities of the Dan River Region. That year, the Danville Orthopedic Clinic moved into the Piedmont Regional Medical Center location at 125 Executive Drive and partnered to form a physical therapy facility next door in Suite B. During the ensuing 2 ½ decades my family grew with the addition of my second daughter, Chelsea, and my son, Gavin while the practice of the Danville Orthopedic Clinic and the medical community expanded and evolved.

We all have witnessed the changes and upheaval the Dan River Region has endured with the decline of tobacco and textiles. But, we have also observed the visionary response aimed at expanding new economy growth in our region. As part of that effort we are witnessing a rebirth of the River District. Private and public investment with an eye to our future is creating exciting and visible impact. The medical community has similarly encountered an unprecedented period of seismic change. The Danville Orthopedic Clinic has been acutely affected yet proactive in this cataclysmic process.

As early as 2005 the Danville Orthopedic Clinic recognized the need to expand and renovate its office space to accommodate growth and the changing needs of a modern medical practice. While considering options we added a Clinical Research division in 2006 and our own Physical therapy and Rehab department in 2007. We brought the much-needed services of Rheumatology to Danville in 2008 and added Southside Pain Management in 2009. The Danville Orthopedic Clinic brought Spine services back to Danville in 2011. This period of expansion required leasing additional space on Memorial Drive to house the Spine, Rheumatology and Pain management services as we continued to seek a new location to accommodate our expanding practice needs. Today the Danville Orthopedic clinic and associated business boast a total of 9 physicians, 2 Physician assistants, and numerous professional staff with a total workforce of over 80 dedicated employees! Our staff represents over 600 years of combined experience! Among our dedicated staff are a few employees who’s years of service deserve special mention—Linda Jarosz, X-ray tech 36 years; Gary Thompson, Physician Assistant 37 years; Nell Hardy, Office manager 40 years; and, our longest employed active member, our favorite nurse who continues to amaze us all- Ann Doss who has been with us for a total of 46 years!

In 2010 members of the Danville Orthopedic Clinic partnered with several local businessmen to form River District Development LLC with an eye on rehabilitating the former Dan River Research Building in the heart of the River District. This group developed a plan to create unique, high quality office space to house the various businesses of the Danville Orthopedic Clinic and medical services of Danville Regional Medical Center while also providing upscale mixed-use tenant space on the first floor and a dining venue in the North Annex (former Mill 1). As many of you know, this effort has been ongoing. Construction on River District Tower, a historic rehabilitation of the 120,000 Sq. Ft. former Dan River Mills Research facility, has been underway since Oct 2015. Once completed in early 2017, River District Tower will showcase the potential of these amazing historic buildings abundant within the River District. The businesses of the Danville Orthopedic Clinic will represent the largest tenant and occupy the top two floors of River District Tower.

Danville Orthopedic Clinic has a long history in our region and has responded to the growing and changing medical needs and expectations of our local community. Our members are local citizens and have committed their lives to the betterment of our community. Acknowledging our expanded scope of medical services while anticipating the unification at one location in River District Tower we decided it was time that our name reflect our innovative delivery of a full spectrum of musculoskeletal care.

Today, with great pleasure, I proudly announce that Danville Orthopedic Clinic, Danville Rheumatology & Arthritis Center, Southside Pain Solutions, DOC Physical Therapy, DOC Sports Medicine Outreach Program, Danville Orthopedic Spine Center and DOC Clinical Research will unify under one name—SPECTRUM MEDICAL.

Spectrum Medical is a full service, integrated musculoskeletal medical practice system. We will celebrate our past as the Danville Orthopedic Clinic but will emerge as a progressive vision of the future delivery of local healthcare. Our new home at River District Tower will be a bold and innovative representation of the past greatness of the former Research facility. Spectrum Medical will seek new heights of innovative care. Our new office location at River District Tower, opening in January 2017, will complete the integration of our Orthopedic, Rheumatology, Spine, Physical Therapy, Sports Medicine, Pain Management and Clinical Research divisions. Over the next several months leading up to our physical move to the new facility we will work to improve various processes within our organization to make this a patient centered operation across the entire SPECTRUM of care. During this transitional period we will utilize our new name and logo. The announcement today is just the first step in a process culminating with our move in January to provide high quality, convenient care in our local community. Our goal is to step into the future with Spectrum Medical at River District Tower.

I wish to personally thank you all for being here today to share our exciting news and I also appreciate your continued support of local businesses striving to better our community. The efforts of our private sector with support from our local government and citizens can and will lead to prosperity. I believed in the potential of this area when I chose to call Danville my home 26 years ago and I am excited to stand before you today to share a piece of the possible. The physicians and staff of Spectrum Medical, our families and friends all thank you deeply for your presence here today. We especially wish to thank our committed patients who have, for the past 68 years, trusted us with their care. We invite you to closely follow the incredible progress unfolding within the former Dan River Research facility in the months ahead as it transforms to River District Tower and the new home of Spectrum Medical!
