We were LIVE! at the Danville Regional Airport for Monday’s Regional Industrial Facilities Authority meeting that started at noon. This article is now complete. We admit that this article could be crappy. Heh. …that you probably didn’t know about. With all of the recent confederate flag controversy, it’s time for everybody to see that people on both sides of the issue can do excellent things for the community. Every Sunday morning, members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (Pittsylvania Vindicators Camp #828) meet at Danville’s Green Hill Cemetery. They volunteer do extra bits of maintenance and housekeeping to make the historic gravesites look even better. Special thanks go to Ed Chaney for sharing these photos of this morning’s work. SouthsideCentral is pleased to publish opinion pieces from all elected officials as well as from our readers. Use the “Contact Us!” link at the top of every SouthsideCentral page to send your submissions in. In this YouCentral article, we’re publishing Buddy Rawley’s speech from Danville City Council’s Thursday night meeting. As in the previous YouCentral article, SouthsideCentral is pleased to print all types of commentary. Here, we publish Lee Vogler’s speech from Danville City Council’s Thursday night meeting. Here at SouthsideCentral, we invite all people and organizations to send us opinion pieces and statements. We will publish them unedited on a space-available basis. YouCentral articles are solely the opinion of the writer or organization. They do not necessarily represent the views of SouthsideCentral nor of our advertisers. We also encourage comments on these articles as well as opposing viewpoints (and we’ll be glad to publish them, too). Today, we have a statement from Virginia Organizing regarding Thursday night’s Danville City Council vote to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the Sutherlin Mansion. (Editor’s Note: This article is now complete.) We’re LIVE! at Danville City Hall for tonight’s City Council meeting. It’s going to be a long one, so thanks in advance for following along with SouthsideCentral. We’ve already got our “pregame show” article with what’s been going on up to now. Refresh this page often for the latest happenings, photos and commentary. We’ll clean this article up and add bonus coverage once we get home tonight. Buckle your seatbelts… we’re going LIVE! Editor’s Note: This article is now complete. The Super Bowl has a pregame show because it’s the biggest football game of the year. Tonight’s Danville City Council meeting is the equivalent of the Super Bowl (except the outcome is already known here). This article will have photos, commentary and happenings from anything that is going on before the 7:00 PM meeting starts. Refresh the page often for the latest. We’ll have a separate article with our LIVE! coverage of the meeting. We’ll clean this article up once we get home and add lots of bonus coverage. Let’s get started. If you’ve got the virtual money, we’ve got the virtual BettingLine. Here comes some more proposition bets for Thursday’s Danville City Council meeting. I think they’re going to have a lot of people there and talk about a Confederate flag. Or something like that. If you need an explanation of a money line, I’ve got it in the first BettingLine! article. Oh yeah… For Entertainment Purposes Only. Heh. (Editor’s Note: Everybody likes making a friendly wager once in a while! For Entertainment Purposes Only, of course. That’s why we’re introducing a new category called “BettingLine!”. If Las Vegas won’t take any action on what’s happening here in the Southside region, we will! Not really, because SouthsideCentral discourages all forms of illegal gambling. That would be illegal, folks. Heh.) When it comes to the Super Bowl, you can place bets on things as ridiculous as the opening coin toss. These types of “proposition bets” are quite popular. For Entertainment Purposes Only, of course. Heh. On Thursday night, Danville City Council will vote on an ordinance that will result in the removal the Confederate flag on the museum grounds and multiple speakers are expected for the final debate on the issue. Let’s take a lighthearted look at some proposition bets for Thursday’s meeting. If you looked at Star News’ Facebook page this weekend, you’d have thought that they were putting on a Confederate Flag rally at Danville’s museum. They had nothing to do with the rally, but a bad decision to copy and paste an email gave people the wrong impression. Sunday is the day where I go over the stories that have caught my eye in the past week. It’s QuickHits! time, folks. August 6th will be a very important night for Danville City Council. I’m expecting them to recognize me for spending my birthday night covering their meeting. Heh. Seriously, we’ve already done a BreakDown on what’s going to happen about the Confederate flag issue. But wait, there’s more! Council will approve the repayment agreement between Norhurst and the Tobacco Commission. Let’s do a BreakDown of exactly how we can hang the official Job Bust title on Norhurst. (Editor’s Note: This article was supposed to have automatically publish a month ago, but something went wrong with the process. We’re publishing it now so that you can see the beautiful photos.) Let’s wrap up this PhotoCentral set of articles about June’s Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce‘s Business After Hours. Supply Resources, Inc. was June’s host and we got to see their beautiful renovations of the old Piedmont Hardware building. We’ve already published Part #1 and Part #2, so let’s finish up our tour here. On Thursday, August 6th, Danville City Council will vote on an ordinance to restrict what flags can be flown on city-owned flagpoles. It’s obvious that this will be an up-or-down vote on the Confederate flag that flies at the museum. In this BreakDown article, I’m going to give my analysis of where I believe each member of Danville City Council stands on the issue and their probable vote. SouthsideCentral had a great time at SoVa Roller Derby League‘s “Summer iScream Party” held at Danville’s Skatetown on Sunday night. I had so much fun, I even pitched in to help announce some of the roller derby action. We’ve got a few PhotoCentral articles coming up with highlights of the fun. Let’s get to our first PhotoCentral now! Let’s wrap up what happened at Monday’s Danville Utility Commission meeting. We already covered a lot in Part #1, so let’s continue where we left off. Monday’s Danville Utility Commission meeting went over the two-hour mark, so we’ve got a lot to recap for you. Let’s get busy with a detailed look at what happened. This article ended up being quite long, so we’re going to split it up into two parts. Hey, hey! Our writing crew has been busy making a new OddsMakers! board… so what are the chances? Let’s play. Let’s take a look at things that are happening, have happened or will happen. Hands on your buzzers, contestants. It’s time for today’s LightningRound! Who doesn’t like roses and horsecrap? SouthsideCentral gets asked to do factchecking a lot, so we’ve came up with a rating system that doesn’t blatantly rip anybody else off. SouthsideCentral is glad to publish any remarks or opinion pieces submitted by elected officials (or anybody else, for that matter). We do not edit the statements in any way, nor does the writer’s opinion necessarily represent the views of SouthsideCentral in any way. Today, we’re giving the stage to Danville’s Vice-Mayor Dr. Gary Miller who talks about his viewpoint on Danville’s Confederate flag issue. Danville Public Schools’ Chief Academic Officer is leaving to take a job in North Carolina. Darn it, I’m going to miss her. SouthsideCentral was LIVE! at Danville City Council for Tuesday night’s Danville City Council meeting. This article is now complete, so enjoy the most detailed recap that you’ll find from any media source. |
